Open your present.

“Open your present,” Randy looked at Sierra with anticipation. The box was too large for jewelry, but Randy was looking at her like he was giving her a wedding ring all over again. She carefully opened the wrapping paper and the two small boxes separated from each other, falling into her lap.

Kevin made a little squeak when he saw her present. Sierra picked up the two boxes and looked at them carefully. Randy tried to explain, “I thought I’d get you a new iPod for Christmas since you stepped on yours.” Kevin and Sierra refused to look at each other. “While I was shopping online, I found this thing. It will fit into your shoe and connect to your new iPod. It will tell you how far you’ve run. You can go online and compare your miles with other people.” Sierra nodded, trying to hide her guilty face.

Kevin kept the conversation going. “I heard about that, what is it called… a Nike+?” Sierra still looked down at her new little iPod Nano and the box for the Nike+. Randy nodded and continued, “Yeah, and now you can watch videos on it. It’s better than your old one. The screen’s not as big as Kevin’s iPhone, but that doesn’t work with this Nike+ thing.”

Kevin interrupted, “But aren’t you worried about her running too much now that she can measure it again?” Sierra searched Randy’s face and he answered, “Considering how much it snows here, there are at least six months of the year when she can’t run all that much, right?” Sierra nodded, trying not to cry. “Thanks, Randy.”
