I’m Done
“I’m done.”
Dave was looking in the bathroom mirror at himself, his eyes conspicuously avoiding Kit Kat.
“Okay, then let me have the sink.”
The two of them shared a tiny apartment just barely larger than Kit Kat’s childhood bedroom. They were squeezed into the bathroom together and she had just came out of the shower. They didn’t even have a bathtub, just a one-person shower. Kit Kat squeezed around the toilet and waited for Dave to let her brush her teeth in the sink, but he just continued looking at his reflection in the foggy mirror. She took the towel from her head and wiped the mirror so he could see himself better, still expecting him to move away from the sink.
“No. I’m done…”
He hesitated. A cold chill ran down Kit Kat’s spine. Dave had been unhappy for a long time. He had tried male bonding drumming circles, therapy and even started his own company in an effort to snap himself out of it. None of it had worked and Kit Kat had tiptoed around his despair for so long that it had become the new normal. The smell of the toothpaste on her brush wafted up, filling her mind with thoughts of mint. She feigned ignorance.
“Done with what?”
He still looked at himself in the mirror, never matching her eyes.
“Done with us.”
A hard lump grew in her stomach. The two cups of coffee churned with her vitamin pills and she felt like she would vomit them up all over him. Instead, she shook her head. “No you’re not. I won’t let you leave me. I’m not the reason you’re unhappy, so leaving me won’t change things for you.”
He finally turned away from his refection and faced her. She could feel her wet hair along the back of her neck, dripping water between her body and the towel wrapped under her arms. Her hair towel was still in her hand and the mirror had gotten foggy again despite her earlier efforts. Dave pronounced his words with a finality that shook the tiny apartment.
“I’m DONE.”
